The Master’s program in Healthcare Management at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is a program for managers that combines relevant knowledge of healthcare, management, governance, and leadership.

Program structure
The course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the nature of the health care system and the fundamentals of governance as a way to influence the operation of this system. It introduces students to the nature of systems and the basics of systems thinking. Students will master the basic concepts and problems of governance – the management of complex systems in the field of public policy. The course reveals the evolutionary nature of health care systems.
It introduces students to the historical, social, political, and economic factors that have shaped the major models of health care systems in the modern world. Throughout the course, students discuss current practical issues that arise in modern health care systems around the world and in Ukraine.
The course topics include: principles and components of a health care system, problems of (de)centralization in the health care sector, basic concepts of health care financing, introduction to universal health coverage, and evaluation of health care systems.
The course will introduce basic epidemiological concepts, different study designs, and the strength of evidence based on study design.
You will learn how to identify current challenges in public health approaches and generate ideas for multilevel and multicomponent approaches to addressing public health problems.
Course topics include: the use of epidemiology to understand disease, health, and the evaluation of health services, the hierarchy of research designs, the evaluation of research data, the specifics of disease prevention, and the socio-ecological perspective of public health.
The course will introduce the basic concepts of leadership in the modern world. It focuses on the key elements of leadership in modern organizations.
You will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of leadership roles and responsibilities, advantages and disadvantages, learn to predict the consequences of behavior and actions, and strengthen your skills to deal with complex leadership situations.
The course focuses on understanding the basics of health economics, its key concepts and their impact on health outcomes and costs. The course also explains how equity, efficiency and effectiveness can be balanced for better health outcomes.
You will learn about market failures in health care and incentives for health care providers. Discuss the relationship between economic development and health, as well as between prevention and potential economic benefits. You will hear about the performance of healthcare systems and providers, as well as the possibility of implementing value-based care.
You will explore the economics of pharmaceuticals and the introduction of innovative pharmaceuticals.
The course provides theoretical and practical knowledge of healthcare financing and explains how government fiscal policy affects the healthcare sector. It explains the concept of financial protection in healthcare and its implementation in Ukraine.
You will delve into the concept of universal coverage and understand the role of guaranteed package of services, co-payments, and voluntary health insurance.
The course topics include: components of healthcare financing systems (pooling, allocation, payment mechanisms), financial protection, informal payments, universal coverage, and health insurance.
The course helps you understand the basic principles and approaches to quality management in healthcare.
You will learn about total quality management, how to plan, manage, and evaluate a quality management system. You will see different aspects of quality, from clinical quality to patient satisfaction, and learn how to create an enabling environment for total quality management. You will learn how to handle errors and manage adverse and emergency events.
Course topics include: total quality management, quality standards, service, risk management.
The course will introduce modern approaches to human resource management both at the level of the healthcare system and at the level of medical institutions. The presentation of theoretical models and examples from other countries is combined with practical experience in Ukraine. The course includes topics whose further development will contribute to the development of human resources in healthcare in Ukraine.
In the course, students study the components of strategy that determine the success of healthcare organizations.
You will learn how to develop a development strategy. To do this, you will master the following topics: goal setting, environmental analysis, selection and implementation of strategies. As part of the course, you will consider practical problems of healthcare management related to strategic planning and management.
The course reveals the theoretical basic concepts of financial management through the prism of a medical institution. The main emphasis is on reading and understanding the financial statements of a medical institution, as well as on making decisions that are financially sound and lead to an increase in the institution’s profits.
The presentation of cases of state-owned enterprises from another industry, medical institutions of different levels in relation to real management decisions will help to develop the skill of “acting by analogy”. You will understand the key financial processes in a medical institution and master the tools for making management decisions in accordance with the development strategy.
Practicing experts from private and municipal institutions will share their successful experience during the course.
The course is designed to enable future and current healthcare managers to understand the importance of evidence-based decision-making and to organize research independently. This course focuses primarily on quantitative and qualitative social research strategies that are relevant in the healthcare context.
At the end of the course, students will prepare their own research proposals for future master’s theses in the second year of study. Therefore, each element of the course is aimed at preparing the relevant sections of the research proposal.
The course provides students with an understanding of how empirical research is planned and conducted, which can later be published in international scientific journals. We will provide an overview of research designs, consider quantitative and qualitative approaches to data collection and analysis, and address the ethical dimension of conducting a research project.
The course reveals the concept and essence of the right to health as the goal of the modern health care system, which should be pursued by health care institutions, as well as by public authorities, local governments, communities, and courts. The understanding of the nature of the right to health is the basis for the tools used by politicians, experts, and civil servants who build and reform health care systems.
The course also focuses on the role of the state in the realization of the right to health through such instruments as public authorities, legislation, licensing and accreditation institutions, and the autonomy of healthcare providers. The course also examines court cases on the understanding and realization of the right to health and equity in health policy making.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE PROGRAM?
The total cost of the program is UAH 220,000.
Scholarships are available for the most motivated students.
Scholarship recipients are selected after passing entrance exams.

Students of the master’s program can

partially cover the cost of education.
The program team cooperates with donors and partners who are ready to support you in your studies.
To participate in the selection for all types of scholarships, you need to pass the entrance exams for the MSc in Healthcare Management. Scholarships will be distributed among applicants who apply for scholarships and take the first 25 places in the ranking list of applicants to the program.
In 2023, 14 students of the program received scholarships that will fully or partially cover the cost of education.
We advise you to register for the exams in any case – interviews in English and professional entrance test at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy or relevant tests.
